Driver killed when car crashes into tree and ditch, South Carolina cops say
One person died following a Tuesday morning crash in the Midlands, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened in Sumter County at about 2:30 a.m., Master Trooper William Bennett said in a Wednesday release.
A 2005 Honda Civic was driving east on U.S. 378, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Pinecrest Drive the Honda ran off the right side of the U.S. 378, where it crashed into a tree then a ditch, Bennett said.
The driver, who was the only person in the car, was taken to an area hospital and later died there, according to Bennett.
The Sumter County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the crash victim.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.
Information about why the Honda veered off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 211 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least eight people have died in Sumter County crashes this year, and 25 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
