Irmo’s World Series Little League team gets new baseball home
Following its run to the World Series last year, Irmo’s Little League team is expanding to a new playing field.
Irmo’s Little Leaguers will be able to play on the field at H.E. Corley Elementary next season under an agreement between the Lexington-Richland 5 school district and the Richland County Recreation Commission announced Jan. 28.
The agreement follows Irmo’s Cinderella run in the Little League World Series last summer. The Irmo All-Stars received national attention on their way to the semifinals of the U.S. bracket in Williamsport, Pa. The team’s three wins in the series were featured on ESPN before the youngsters were eliminated by Nevada.
“This partnership is a direct response to the growing local interest in the Irmo Little League, fueled by their recent successes in the Little League World Series,” District 5 Superintendent Akil Ross said in a statement announcing the use agreement.
Irmo Little League will continue to play on its primary field close to the elementary school at the Richland County-run Friarsgate Park. But the H.E. Corley field will be used for the introductory Coach Pitch program for new volunteers and the AA Minors team for ages 7 to 10, Irmo Little League confirmed to The State in an email.
According to the agreement, the school district will retain use of the field during weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., but Irmo Little League will have use of the field evenings and weekends.
“By providing access to Field 7 for evening and weekend activities, School District Five supports the development of young athletes and fosters a sense of community pride and engagement,” Ross said.
