Top storylines for the game
- Clemson and Duke released their initial ACC availability reports Thursday night. Clemson, most notably, listed starting QB Cade Klubnik (ankle) as probable, putting him on track to play after a one-game absence. Offensive linemen Collin Sadler and Elyjah Thurmon (both of whom have started multiple games this season) are out. But usual starting left tackle Tristan Leigh is available after missing the SMU game. Duke’s most prominent new injury is to starting cornerback Kimari Robinson, who’s listed as questionable.
- Clemson’s Memorial Stadium struggles are real. After an Oct. 18 home loss to SMU, the Tigers have now lost five straight home games to power conference teams for the first time since a six-game streak in 1970-71. Clemson lost at home to Louisville and South Carolina to end the 2024 season and has dropped home games to LSU, Syracuse and SMU this season. Their last home win against a P4 team came against Virginia — over a calendar year ago. That streak will be put to the test against a Duke team that hasn’t beaten Clemson in Death Valley since 1980. In 25 previous home games against Duke, Clemson is 20-4-1.
- It’s crazy to think about the Duke game in context of bowl eligibility, but that’s where this Clemson team is. Sitting at 3-4 with five games left on their schedule, the preseason No. 4 Tigers must finish at least 3-2 to secure a 6-6 record and a spot in the college football postseason. Clemson’s home game against FCS Furman should be a blowout win. Past that, the Tigers are running out of opportunities. They must finish at least 2-2 against Duke (home), Florida State (home), No. 16 Louisville (road) and South Carolina (road). ESPN’s FPI gives Clemson a 66.1% chance of getting to six wins. Pro Football Focus gives the Tigers a 69% chance.
- Duke’s passing offense will test Clemson. Starting quarterback and Tulane transfer Darian Mensah leads the country with 315.9 passing yards per game, and he has thrown 17 touchdowns against just two interceptions. The Blue Devils have averaged 36.5 points in four ACC games so far, and seven players have at least 100 receiving yards. On the other side, Clemson has the country’s No. 78 passing defense and just allowed SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings to pick them apart.
Clemson vs. Duke players to watch
Clemson WR Tyler Brown: Brown’s production has dropped after he tallied 88 receiving yards across Clemson’s first two games (just 60 yards since). Could Bryant Wesco Jr.’s absence lead to more opportunities?
Clemson LB Sammy Brown: The sophomore has been arguably the most consistent player on the Tigers’ defense, with a team-high 50 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss.
Duke RB Nate Sheppard: Mensah is a great passer, but don’t forget about his running back. Sheppard, a true freshman, has a team-high 497 rushing yards and 651 all-purpose yards and leads a one-two punch with Anderson Castle.
Duke DE Vincent Anthony Jr.: Team-high 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.
