Transfer guard Ta’Niya Latson, nation’s No. 1 scorer, commits to South Carolina
Dawn Staley has earned her first commitment from a transfer portal player — and it’s a big one.
Former Florida State guard Ta’Niya Latson announced her intentions to transfer to South Carolina on social media Tuesday.
Latson led all Division I players in scoring this season with 25.2 points per game. The junior was a three-year starter for the Seminoles and earned All-ACC honors in each year of her career. She shot 45.1% from the field and 34.3% from 3-point range and set a new single-season scoring record at FSU with 731 points.
The 5-foot-8 Latson entered the transfer portal in March after FSU lost to LSU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She received interest from the likes of LSU, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss (among others), according to On3 Sports.
Several Gamecock connections likely helped sweeten the deal to bring Latson to Columbia.
Latson won state championships in Georgia with Raven Johnson at West Lake High. She also played AAU ball alongside MiLaysia Fulwiley, Joyce Edwards, Ashlyn Watkins and Kamilla Cardoso.
“I would tell her let’s run it back,” Johnson said of Latson before the Sweet 16. “She knows what a winning culture feels like, a disciplined basketball team. She knows all that stuff. I’m definitely trying to get her to come here. I’m in her ear, I’m definitely in her ear. I’d be happy, we all would be happy to play with her.”
Fulwiley told the Greenville News before the Sweet 16 that Latson’s addition could spell another undefeated season for the Gamecocks.
“Man, I would love that. Raven and I were just talking about that,” Fulwiley told the Greenville News. “She kind of reminds me of myself. She has a high motor that doesn’t stop. If we have that here, I think that might be another undefeated season.”
After losing to UConn in the national championship on Sunday, USC coach Dawn Staley said she planned to target experience in the transfer portal. Latson more than meets that requirement.
She started in all 93 games she played across her three years with FSU and averaged 30.2 minutes per game.
She’ll have one year of eligibility with the Gamecocks.
