The teams aren’t great.

But the coaching matchup is historic.

When Dabo Swinney and Clemson football visit North Carolina and Bill Belichick on Saturday (noon, ESPN), it will mark the first time in 32 years — and only the second time in college football history — that a multi-time NFL Super Bowl champion coach will face off against a multi-time college FBS national champion coach.

Bill Walsh and Joe Paterno, you have company.

Swinney vs. Belichick will be the first meeting of a multi-time Super Bowl champion coach and multi-time college champion coach since Walsh and Stanford blew out Penn State and Paterno 24-3 in the Blockbuster Bowl on New Year’s Day 1993.

“It’s amazing,” Swinney said Tuesday. “I never in my lifetime thought I would get an opportunity to coach against Coach Belichick. I mean, how cool is that?”

Belichick also extended praise to Swinney during his Tuesday news conference in Chapel Hill, calling Clemson “a great program.”

“I have a ton of respect for Coach Swinney,” Belichick said. “His staff, players, the program they’ve run ... Those guys are tough. They love football, and they do it the right way.”

Neither Clemson nor UNC is having the season they expected. The Tigers were the preseason No. 4 team and considered a legit national championship contender. They enter Saturday at 1-3 (0-2 ACC), their worst four-game start since 2004.

UNC football, meanwhile, branded itself as the “33rd NFL team” under Belichick, but the Tar Heels have failed to even look competitive against Power 4 competition. Belichick and general manager Michael Lombardi, following a 2-2 (0-0 ACC) start to the season, have recently pivoted to talking about upcoming high school recruiting classes.

Those on-field performances have turned a matchup that drew preseason ESPN College GameDay buzz into a meeting of teams that are a combined 0-5 against power schools. The noon kickoff has even relegated rapper Ludacris to a 10 a.m. pregame concert.

Clemson, which has won six straight against UNC, is favored by 14 points.

But Swinney isn’t letting that dull the shine of a unique and historic matchup.

“I mean, he’s arguably the greatest coach ever, and certainly at the pro level,” Swinney said, adding that he has picked Belichick’s brain in ACC coaches’ meetings and Belichick is sharp, observant and “passionate about what he wants to do in life.”

Belichick said Tuesday his relationship with Swinney is “great.” The former Patriots coach praised Swinney’s leadership, which he said he saw up close during the ACC’s 2025 spring meetings when Swinney spoke up about “various issues.”

“I can just tell from his comments and his opinions on certain things where he was coming from, what his beliefs are, what’s important to him and what his convictions are,” Belichick said. “And those were all pretty consistent with what I thought they would be.”

“We talked about some things outside of the meetings and off camera,” Belichick added. “He’s been very helpful (with) a couple of things that I’ve asked him about, and I appreciate his openness and willingness to try and give me some advice that I’ve asked for.”

Historical significance of Dabo, Belichick matchup

Saturday’s coaching matchup between Swinney (who led Clemson to national titles in 2016 and 2018) and Belichick (who won six Super Bowls as the Patriots’ coach and two more as the Giants’ defensive coordinator) is historically rare.

Per Clemson, it is only the second meeting between a multi-time college champion coach and multi-time Super Bowl champion coach and the first since Walsh (three Super Bowls with the 49ers) vs. Paterno (two national titles with Penn State).

There have been six other instances of a coach with at least one Super Bowl facing another coach with at least one national title. All of those came during Walsh’s 1992-94 tenure at Stanford, where he’d previously been head coach from 1977-78.

A number of other college national champion coaches have gone on to win Super Bowls (Pete Carroll, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer), but all of those Super Bowl wins occurred after they left college football. Belichick, 74, and the late Walsh are the only two Super Bowl champs to return to the college level as head coaches.

“He’s a really good football coach that loves what he does,” Swinney said. “I wish him all the best, except for this weekend. We need to win a lot worse than he does.”
