Traffic check points planned in Lexington during day of solar eclipse

Drivers in Lexington County might have seen an added police presence on the roads this weekend. It won’t be diminished on Monday, the day of the historic solar eclipse.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is conducting public safety checkpoints to help maintain safe roads with an influx visitors to the area to watch the eclipse. The purpose of the checkpoints is to eliminate collisions – including speeding and unsafe driving practices.

Deputies will be patrolling several Lexington County roads, including:

  • Belo Road
  • Calvary Church Road
  • Ephrata Drive
  • Falcon Drive
  • Freida Road
  • Longs Pond Road
  • Longview Street
  • Mesa Verda Drive
  • Methodist Park Road
  • Sidney Road

All drivers who enter a checkpoint will be stopped and checked for a valid drivers license, vehicle registration, and insurance requirements. They will also be checked for possible impairment, seat belt use, proper child restraint use and any other possible violations that might be visible to officers.
