Sumter police investigate early morning shooting death
Sumter police are investigating a Sumter man’s death after he was shot and killed outside of his home early Sunday morning, according to officials.
Tonyia McGirt, a department spokeswoman, said police were dispatched to a residence located at 10 Dixie Drive at 1 a.m. in reference to a shots-fired call. When police arrived at the scene, they located Robert Darnell Jones, 37, deceased at the front of the home with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body.
McGirt said the Sumter County Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigators are working to identify the shooter responsible for Jones’ death, but police believe that this is an isolated incident and not a random act of violence.
