West Columbia man stole $68 steak to pay child support, he told police
A West Columbia man was arrested Monday after police say he stole a steak from Bi-Lo.
The ribeye, weighing in at just over seven pounds, was worth $68. Joseph Anthony Davis, 52, tried to throw the steak under a vehicle when police confronted him, according to the incident report from the West Columbia Police Department.
Davis told police he took the steak “because I was going to sell it to someone to make some money so I can pay my child support,” the report says.
When officials ran a criminal history check, it showed that Davis had three prior shoplifting charges on his record – all from 2009.
