Shooting suspect Bernie Peoples III surrendered to authorities Saturday night, Sumter police said.

The 28-year-old Sumter man was wanted on a murder warrant following the shooting death Friday afternoon of Ante Lavern Witherspoon, also 28-years-old.

Witherspoon’s body was found outside a home on Dibert Street by officers who responded to a call. An autopsy on Saturday determined that Witherspoon had been shot multiple times.

The men knew each other, police said, but what prompted the violent encounter has not been determined.

An investigation continues.
