New details released in deadly 'castle' shooting in Greenville
A coroner's report provides new details about the confrontation that led to an alleged intruder's death outside the home of Southern Tide founder Allen Stephenson.
The report, obtained by The Greenville News under the state's Freedom of Information Act, comes three weeks after 32-year-old Matthew Whitman was shot and killed March 19 in the front yard of Stephenson's Altamont Road home.
Whitman died of multiple shotgun wounds, authorities have said.
Stephenson has said through his attorney that he shot Whitman — someone he had never met — when Whitman attacked him with a knife after being warned repeatedly to leave.
The Greenville County Coroner's Office identified Whitman two days later. He lived in a trailer with his mother on the flanks of Paris Mountain, about 1.5 miles away from Stephenson's home. The house was built to resemble a German castle and sits on 30 acres behind a gated entrance.
