Defensive back J.J. Givens of Mechanicsville, Va., became South Carolina’s second commitment of the day Saturday, making his pledge at the conclusion of the Showcase Camp.
Givens (6-2, 170) said he saw everything he needed to see on this visit to USC and had the feeling the time was right to commit.
“They genuinely have my best interest outside of football and they are definitely going to take care of me,” Givens said. “I feel like I can come here and have an instant impact playing DB, especially at the corner position because I’m long, lanky and versatile. I definitely feel like I can bring what South Carolina needs to be pushed over the hump.”
USC recruiter Deke Adams visited Atlee High School a couple of weeks ago, and that’s when Givens decided to visit Columbia. He took a personal visit Friday to look at the campus.
“It just made me fall in love and after I talked with Coach Spurrier and Coach Hoke in person I just had to pull the trigger,” he said.
Givens said he was also seriously considering Penn State, Arizona State, Michigan, Michigan State, Wake Forest and Ole Miss. He called his pledge “a 100 percent commitment.”
Last season Givens in on 34 tackles and 4 interceptions.
He is USC’s fifth pledge for the Class of 2016 and first a defensive back.
