Some classic Midlands country cooking is coming to the Red Bank area of Lexington County.

Officials with Lizard’s Thicket, the ubiquitous meat-and-three chain that has 13 locations across the Midlands and South Carolina, said a new location is being planned near Red Bank. According to Lizard’s Thicket operations manager Robert Williams and community relations manager Sara Krisnow, the new one will be built in the 1700 block of S. Lake Drive, near the Walmart and the Popshelf store there.

Lizard’s Thicket is hopeful the new location near Red Bank will be open by the end of the year. Construction on the project has not yet begun.

Williams said he is excited to help bring Lizard’s Thicket to Red Bank, noting that a sit-down restaurant likely will be a welcome addition to the retail corridor of S. Lake Drive.

“We do better in Lexington County than anywhere we go,” Williams said. “It’s full of working families who grew up on this food, and it’s a great market for us. They’ve been very supportive.”

Lizard’s Thicket is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2023. It has long been a staple of the Midlands dining scene and is well known for its fried chicken, pork chops, country fried steak, macaroni and cheese, cornbread and numerous other staples of country cooking. The restaurants, which are spread across the Columbia and Lexington area, as well as a location in Florence, also are known for their breakfast offerings.

According to company statistics, Lizard’s Thicket serves more than 4 million customers per year and sells more than 600,000 pounds of fried chicken annually. It also serves up nearly 900,000 glasses of iced tea every year, not counting refills.
