Hazing incident involving Lexington High baseball under multiple investigations
South Carolina’s State Law Enforcement Division is investigating a hazing incident at Lexington High School.
A spokesperson for SLED confirmed investigators are looking into an incident involving members of Lexington High’s varsity baseball team. The state law enforcement agency received a request to investigate from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department on Feb. 18, the spokesperson said.
The Lexington 1 school district said in a statement that school administrators were alerted to a potential hazing incident on Feb. 16. Lexington High then alerted the sheriff’s department of the incident.
“At the request of law enforcement, the school paused its internal review while SLED began its work,” the school district said. “On March 2, Lexington High School was advised it could move forward with a separate school-based investigation.”
Both investigations are ongoing, and no details about the alleged incident have been released. It’s unclear if any Wildcat players are being disciplined over the incident.
Lexington is one of the top high school baseball programs in the state and has won six state championships. The most recent came in 2024 when Lexington swept Ashley Ridge in the best-of-three championship series.
The Wildcats played for the Class 5A Division I championship last year before losing to James Island, 2-1, in the title series.
Lexington was ranked No. 3 in this year’s S.C. Baseball Coaches Class 5A Division I preseason rankings. The Wildcats went 1-3 at the Opterra Solutions Invitational last week.
“Lexington High School and Lexington County School District One are fully cooperating with law enforcement,” the school district’s statement continued. “Hazing and any behavior that harms students is taken very seriously. The district will continue to follow board policy and district procedures as the school’s review moves forward.”
