2015 SC READ-IN: More than 2,500 children from across South Carolina will gather at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at the State House to participate in a parade at 10 a.m. The parade includes book characters, college mascots, and authors. The public is invited. www.read-in-sc.org

AUTHOR SIGNING: Margaret Thornton will sign copies of her book “Charleston: A Novel” from 2:30 p.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Books on Broad, 944 Broad St., Camden. The event is free and open to the public. (803) 713-7323 www.booksonbroad.com

SPEAKER AT THE CENTER: Ray McManus will discuss his book, “Punch. Poems” from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday at the State Library, 1500 Senate St. Free and open to the public. (803) 734-8666

LITERARY CAKE CONTEST: To celebrate National Library Week (April 12-18), the State Library will host a literary cake decorating contest. Participants may submit cakes decorated to represent a character from a favorite book, a favorite children’s book cover, or anything else book-related. Participants must register online. www.statelibrary.sc.gov

OPEN BOOK SERIES: The author series spring lineup includes George Saunders, Mary Szybist, Kate Christensen, David Bajo, Teju Cole and Chang-rae Lee. 6-7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays March 16-April 22 at the Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library at the University of South Carolina. Monday will be Peter Steinberg’s talk on “Mercy 6” and Wednesday will be David Bajo’s visit.
