He was nominated for an award, but Columbia native Aziz Ansari was a ceremony no-show
The Screen Actors Guild Awards were held Sunday night, and Columbia native Aziz Ansari was nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. But the comedian who grew up in Bennettsville was nowhere to be found.
Ansari was one of the few no-shows among nominated actors at the award ceremony. No official statement was given for his absence, but it comes a week after the Golden Globe Award-winning actor was accused of sexual misconduct.
A woman said Ansari ignored her repeated requests to slow down the physical nature of their relationship during a date last September. In a statement, Ansari said he believed his interaction with the woman was “completely consensual.”
His peers in the acting community didn’t seem to miss Ansari on Sunday.
When the nominees for Best Actor in a Comedy Series were announced, there was applause for each. Save for Ansari.
After Ansari was nominated for his role in the Netflix show “Master of None,” there was noticeable silence and no pause was given to allow for applause or any other reactions.
On Jan. 7, Ansari won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Ansari is also the co-creator, writer and occasional director of “Master of None,” which he previously won an Emmy Award in September for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series.
At the Golden Globes, Ansari wore all black as well as a pin with the “Time’s Up” logo on it. Both were in support of doing something to end sexual assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace.
In his statement last week, Ansari closed by saying, “I continue to support the movement that is happening in our culture. It is necessary and long overdue.”
There has been no word from Netflix whether this accusation would impact Ansari and the future of “Master of None.”
Ansari also is known for playing the role of Tom Haverford in NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” and his standup comedy.
