South Carolina “Blues Doctor” Drink Small is in the hospital with pneumonia.

Small, 82, is recovering at Palmetto Health Baptist hospital, friend Clair DeLune said. DeLune is a blues radio show host and author of “South Carolina Blues.”

“He’s in good spirits, and he’s hoping to come home soon,” she said.

The blues legend and Bishopville native recently was named a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts — the highest honor in folk art.

Tuesday, on Facebook, Small posted that he was in a hospital bed, but that “y’all are in Drink’s heart and his head. Thank you for your prayers.”
