Tiffany J is more than just a Columbia artist. She’s a renaissance woman that not only gives back to her community, but empowers young African-American girls through her music, art, and outreach efforts.
Q. For the people that don’t know you, tell us more about what you do.
A. I am an inspirational personality, a musical artist that presents a soulful approach to melodic art, and an entrepreneur. I have a heart that desires to help people find themselves, fully love that being, and operate in it freely through all that I do. More recently, I’ve been introduced as the creator of Super Beauty, a fictional character that has super powers that diminish the influence of bullies and boosts self-esteem.
Q. How important is it to have influences for young girls of color?
A. For me, it’s important that young girls of color see themselves represented. Often times, society puts us last or as a second option, but why are we always the exceptions? It’s time for us to be the mold. At 12 years old, I attempted suicide, but I stand tall today as a person who overcame depression and low self-esteem. So, it’s key for me to reach girls at an impressionable age in hopes that they find the true value in themselves regardless of what mainstream media portrays.
Q. How did TI catch wind of what you’re doing?
A. I was contacted via Facebook by an executive at BET who suggested I send in a pitch for TI’s Grand Hustle Pitch Your Hustle competition. I pitched the Super Beauty brand but focused on the doll, the Super Beauty Pep Talker who says more than 20 phrases to boost self-esteem. I was a top 3 finalist and BET produced a video about my brand. Then I was selected as the grand prize winner and the price included a consultation with TI. My team and I made the most of it and discussed future collaborations. You’ll have to stay tuned to see what happens next!
Q. As a musician, what are you currently working on?
A. I’m so excited about my evolution as a musical artist. I just released an inspirational song, “Climb,” and a music video. I am currently working on my second studio album, “Epiphany 3:25.” Of course, I’m still doing sing-o-grams around town and gigging, but my upcoming album is my baby that I’m super excited about.
Q. What’s next?
A. Super Beauty’s brother, Handsome Hero, will be released soon, and we’re working on a musical project for the brand as well as an animation series. I hope to continue traveling with delivery Pep Talks all over the country with Super Beauty as my sidekick.
