Binge-worthy shows for the self-quarantined: Indulge in documentaries
We’ve spent a lot of time viewing fiction in these articles, but sometimes you need something with a bit more substance. This kind of substance can only be found in documentaries. It’s real life captured on film.
Now, I’m not talking about “Tiger King” style documentaries, though that has its place. I’m talking about ordinary people pushing past their limits to achieve something.
Here are some films that are packed with struggles, laughs, triumphs and so much more.
‘Indie Game: The Movie’
What it’s about: A documentary that follows the journeys of indie game developers as they create games and release those works, and themselves, to the world.
Why you should watch: Many of us enjoy video games, but we don’t realize the blood, sweat and tears put into making them. This movie is a true underdog story filled with beautiful cinematography and quirky games. If you’ve ever been passionate about creating something, this movie will ring true for you.
Where to find it: Available on Amazon Prime.
‘Minimalism’
What it’s about: How might your life be better with less? This film examines the many flavors of minimalism by taking the audience inside the lives of minimalists from all walks of life.
Why you should watch: Are we being consumed by our consumption? Are you a true minimalist if you own underwear? This movie answers the big questions and makes you think about why we go after a certain lifestyle. This film is poetic at times, thought provoking and funny.
Where to find it: Available on Netflix.
‘Batman & Bill’
What it’s about: Documentary about the uncredited co-creator of Batman, Bill Finger.
Why you should watch: Batman is one of the most beloved characters in comics, but the creation of this caped crusader began with a crime. There’s mystery, there’s double crosses, heartbreak and more. Whether you like Batman or not, this is a movie worth your time.
Where to find it: Available on Hulu.
‘Apollo 11’
What it’s about: A look at the Apollo 11 mission to land on the moon led by commander Neil Armstrong and pilots Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.
Why you should watch: We’ve all seen the fuzzy, black and white footage of Neil Armstrong saying “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” This gives a wonderful new insight about what it took to get to the moon. You see them moving the rocket into position and the astronauts getting suiting up. There is a lot more to space travel than you might think. The movie is rated G so the whole family can watch.
Where to find it: Available on Hulu.
‘The Imagineering Story’
What it’s about: The inside look into the Walt Disney Imagineering company.
Why you should watch: This is like the ultimate special feature on the “Most magical place on Earth.” You get an insiders look at how they build things, why they create them the way they do. You also get the story of how Walt Disney came up with the idea for his theme park. It’s a look at a part of our history mixed with imagination.
Where to find it: Season 1 is available on Disney+.
‘Running Wild with Bear Grylls’
What it’s about: Bear Grylls, British adventurer, takes A-list celebrities on wild outdoor adventures, pushing them beyond their comfort zone.
Why you should watch: Bear Grylls used to battle the elements alone, now he’s bringing Hollywood with him. These are “fish out of water” stories and it’s fun to watch our favorite stars overcome their fears as they lament about what they got themselves into.
Where to find it: Season 5 is available on Disney+.
‘The Elephant Queen’
What it’s about: Athena is a mother who will do everything in her power to protect her herd when they are forced to leave their waterhole. This epic journey, narrated by Chiwetel Ejiofor, takes audiences across the African savannah and into the heart of an elephant family. A tale of love, loss and coming home.
Why you should watch: Elephants are some of the most intriguing animals on the planet. They are incredibly intelligent and this film gives us a peek into their world.
Where to find it: Available on AppleTV+.
‘Chasing Happiness’
What it’s about: A behind-the-scenes look at the life and work of The Jonas Brothers as they prepare their first album in six years.
Why you should watch: You may or may not be a fan of the Jonas Brothers, but that doesn’t really matter. The road to such stardom is always an interesting one and rarely is the path to fame the same for everyone.
Where to find it: Available on Amazon Prime.
