One Day A Week: Let’s stay in Columbia
If The Washington Post opinion column is advising its readers to “stay away from South Carolina” as coronavirus infection rates spike, we should be taking days to “stay in Columbia.”
Fun
Keep your mind off the present and your hands busy with homemade play dough. Regardless of your age, it’s a great indoor activity. To make your dough, mix 1 cup of flour, 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar, and a 1/3 cup of salt in a saucepan. Add 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Stir over medium-low heat and add your preferred food coloring before it starts getting thick. If the mixture gets too thick before you add the color it won’t be even. Continue stirring and scrapping the bottom of the pan until the mixture isn’t wet anymore.
The whole process shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. Remove the ball of dough from the pan and place on wax paper to cool. Once it’s rested (about one minute), knead away. Remember, after play time is over, store your homemade dough in a plastic bag or air-tight container in the fridge.
Food
Stay well within your six feet of social distance by preordering your lunch from City Limits Barbeque. On the outside it may look like a food truck, but this Texas and Carolina barbecue restaurant operates a full-service kitchen where everything is made from scratch. Keep it simple with a locally grown Red Bounty tomato and Duke mayo sandwich. Or go whole hog with whole hog hash, packaged in one-pound pints. Join their mailing list to find out when and where they’ll be the next Saturday you are craving Southern summertime favorites.
Where to find it: 711 E. Main St, Lexington. www.citylimitsq.com. 803-260-7467. Open Saturdays.
Drink
Just pretend you’re at a bar by making a quarantine cocktail at home with supplies bought from Lake Murray liquors, a locally owned and operated store in the Ballentine Market Shopping Center. As their tagline states, they may not be the biggest supplier, but their striving to be the best. Go in for the friendly service and leave knowing your drink order helped support a family business.
Where to find it: 1345 Dutch Fork Road, Irmo. www.lake-murray-liquors.buisness.site. 803-407-1218. Open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday; 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday.
Leisure
Stay in and curl up with a good bedtime story by phoning your friendly neighborhood librarian at Richland Library. For reading recommendations call 803-799-9084 and press “6.” Your call will be answered by a staff member who will share one of their favorite tales with you.
