Elton John fans have to wait longer to say farewell in Columbia due to coronavirus
Elton John’s concert in Columbia has been postponed because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The second leg of the music legend’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” North American tour was supposed to kickoff at Colonial Life Arena on May 22. But promoters said it will be rescheduled, just like most of the first part of the tour in 2020.
The plan now is for Elton John to return to Columbia in 2021 for the show.
“The health of Elton’s fans is of utmost importance,” Colonial Life Arena officials said Thursday. “This tough decision has been made with the continued safety and well-being of his fans at a time when health services are under increased pressure and with the concern that these gatherings continue to risk accelerating the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).”
It is just the latest of many performances set for Colonial Life Arena that have been postponed to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in South Carolina.
Information on a rescheduled date for the concert was not available. New information for the 2021 show is supposed to be “announced soon,” according to a tweet on Elton John’s feed.
Anyone who had tickets for the May 22 performance should hold on to them, as they’re supposed to be honored on the rescheduled date, both Elton John and Colonial Life Arena officials tweeted.
“Elton promises to continue performing live for all his dedicated fans around the world again and thanks you for your endless support,” a tweet on Elton John’s feed said.
In addition to the May 22 show in Columbia, all of the “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour dates through July 8 have been postponed.
This was the second scheduled Columbia show on the farewell tour after Elton John performed at Colonial Life Arena in March of 2019.
“I just want to say South Carolina, thanks for everything you’ve ever given me,” John told the sold-out crowd at Colonial Life Arena as he left the stage on March 13, in what was then believed to be the final live show in Columbia in his 50-year career.
The next event on Colonial Life Arena’s calendar is a rescheduled Jimmy Buffett concert on June 9. There are three other concerts currently scheduled to be held at the arena in July and August.
