Lake Murray’s floating music festival gets new date as COVID-19 cases continue to rise

A floating music festival on Lake Murray has been rescheduled because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Originally set to be held on June 13, the Reggaetronic Lake Murray Music Festival has been postponed by a month. The eighth annual event is now scheduled to be held at Jim Spence Island on July 25, event organizers said Tuesday in a news release.

“Save the NEW date ... because we are moving forward with the 2020 season of Reggaetronic Lake Murray Music Festival,” it said in the release.

Organizers said they are using caution and prioritizing the safety of those attending the concert, as well as the Lake Murray community.

While saying they are moving “full steam ahead” with the event, organizers are taking guidance from South Carolina government and health officials. That list includes the CDC, WHO, Department of Natural Resources, and the Coast Guard, according to the release.

More changes are possible based on COVID-19 developments.

“We have ramped up necessary precautions for the stage and VIP area,” organizers said.

The festival is only accessible by boat, and it’s free — save for the VIP area, which includes front-row parking for $250 and a service charge. Organizers do ask those planning to attend to make a $25 donation, and proceeds will benefit the Shriners Children’s Hospital.

Jim Spence Island is near Lexington, and close to the Moonshiners Patio Bar & Grill.

The concert is “a celebration of modern reggae, funk, rock, and electronic music fostering an environment of friendship and fellowship highlighting the spirit of the Palmetto State,” according to the event website. All attendees younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Performers set to take the floating stage in July include Bumpin Uglies, Styles & Complete, Of Good Nature, Bois Obscur, and Lefty at the Washout.

Since testing began, 518 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Lexington County, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. That is the fourth highest amount in South Carolina, behind Richland County (1,250), Greenville County (1,116) and Florence County (540).

Through Monday, there have been 8,942 positive cases of COVID-19 in South Carolina, and 391 coronavirus-related deaths, health officials said.
