Meet Me at the Rocket: Dwaun Sellers tries Grandma Brown’s Bacon Cinnamon Roll
Dear SC State Fair,
I have a confession to make. For many years I’ve been coming here for one reason: the food. The exhibits, rides and games are great fun too — in that order — but “fair food” alone is well-worth the yearly pilgrimage.
Take for example this year’s decadent treat, Grandma Brown’s bacon cinnamon roll. John and Sandy Class, who took over the business more than 15 years ago from “Grandma Brown”, incorporated hickory smoked bacon into the signature cinnamon roll recipe after a friend made the suggestion. At first they were skeptical, but the results have been as sweet as the roll itself.
Grandma Brown was 80 when she retired from making cinnamon rolls. She’s responsible for the recipe,
said Sandy Class
owner of Grandma Brown’s Cinnamon Rolls with her husband, John.“People that eat it like it and come back for more,” said Sandy.
If the idea of a bacon cinnamon roll doesn’t entice your taste buds, try their other menu options: the original cinnamon roll, their signature pecan roll — made with pecans grown in Cameron, SC — or their famous bread pudding.
We’ve often been compared to Cinnabon,
said Sandy Class
owner of Grandma Brown’s Cinnamon Rolls with her husband, John.“Our bread pudding is another family recipe,” said Sandy. “We take our cinnamon roll bread dough and make our bread pudding. So its like grandma’s recipe. We have people that will take a pan of bread pudding home.”
People have a similar option with the bacon cinnamon roll. If you buy six or more not only will you save a dollar per roll, but you can also plan to serve them for the holidays. Yes, the holidays.
“They’ll last six months in your freezer,” said Sandy. “As long as you thaw them first. Once they’re thawed stick them in the microwave for 40 seconds and its just like they came out of the oven. We have a lot of people that do that. People take them out for Christmas or Thanksgiving. Its like having the State Fair at home.”
