New apartments could be coming to this busy Irmo, SC intersection. Here’s where
A rezoning request could bring a new apartment complex to Irmo, but some neighbors fear the project will overwhelm the already fast-growing area.
The Giddings Group, a Georgia-based developer, wants to rezone 16 acres of agricultural land at the corner of Farming Creek Road and Dreher Shoals Road and turn it into a commercial district, according to the Irmo Planning Commission.
Though the developer has not yet submitted a proposal to build on the land, it sent the Planning Commission a conceptual design for an apartment complex. The design included five three-story residential buildings with 266 units total as well as a pool and a fitness building.
JJ Priestino lives right around the corner from the property. He said he and his neighbors don’t want to see anything built on that land because the area is already too crowded.
“Traffic is outrageous now,” he said, adding that the problem has been exacerbated by a number of new shopping plazas, housing complexes and storage facilities that have popped up in recent years.
“Truly, our infrastructure can’t handle another big development,” he said.
The Giddings Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Before the project can move forward, the planning commission must approve the rezoning request. It is set to review that proposal at its meeting on Monday night.
