Columbia resident dead after four car crash shuts down major Lexington highway
After a multi-vehicle crash left one dead and shut down U.S. 1 in Lexington for hours, the Columbia resident who passed away has been identified, according to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
Rusty Wayne Shull Jr., 22, originally of Circleville, Ohio, died after sustaining injuries in the crash, according to the statement.
Shull was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the coroner.
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. on U.S. 1 at Morgan Drive, near Interstate 20, according to the Lexington Police Department.
Officials believe Shull was traveling westbound on the road when a car pulled out in front of him and hit his car, according to the statement. Shull crossed over into another lane, where two other cars crashed into him.
A picture posted to Twitter by the police department shows at least four cars with damage, including an SUV that appears to have run off the roadway and crashed through a fence.
Shull died at the scene, according to the coroner. The drivers of the other vehicles were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Inbound traffic on U.S. 1 was detoured onto I-20, police said. Outbound traffic was detoured onto Harmon Street.
U.S. 1 reopened after being shut down for hours Thursday morning.
The Lexington Police Department are investigating the incident.
