Cain seeks to reclaim Batesburg-Leesville post
Steve Cain is seeking to be re-instated as a Batesburg-Leesville town councilman.
His removal from office by other town leaders is based on erroneous conclusions about alleged nonresidency, Cain said in a legal challenge to the June 15 decision.
Cain was ousted from a post he held for 10 years in a 4-3 decision that came after he was absent from council meetings for eight months.
He declined then to explain his absence but insisted he had not moved out of the Lexington County community of 5,500 residents.
Cain recently turned himself in to law enforcement officials to face criminal charges for failure to pay child support.
Other council members said Cain evaded questions about his residency.
Cain often has been at odds with fellow town leaders.
