Katie’s Krops Camp in Lexington takes swipe at hunger
Katie’s Krops will raise a garden bed 9:30 a.m.- noon Friday at Lexington Interfaith Community Services, 216 Harmon St., Lexington.
The South Carolina non-profit that empowers youngsters to help feed the hungry is sponsoring the activity as part of its third annual Katie’s Krops Camp that runs this week in Pelion.
During each camp, participants take part in a community with a service project.
The idea for Katie’s Krops began in 2008 after Summerville youngster Katie Stagliano, then 9-years old, grew a 40-pound cabbage. She donated the produce to a soup kitchen where it fed 275 guests and, moved by the experience, she started Katie's Krops with the first garden in her hometown.
The organization has grown through the years and now funds more than 80 youth-run gardens in 30 states.
Katie’s Krops Camp is hosted each summer by WP Rawl at the company’s headquarters in Pelion. Rawl is a third generation local leafy greens grower, processor and distributor.
The public is invited to Friday’s garden build. For more information or to volunteer Friday, call (803) 957-6656.
