A Woodruff woman has been arrested on child neglect charges after deputies said they found a disabled child covered in bug bites inside a home overrun with cockroaches and rodents.

Crystal Star Lawson, 35, of 216 Snowmill Road, has been charged with five counts of neglect of a child. She was taken to the Spartanburg County jail Tuesday.

Deputies went to her home in reference to a welfare check and found the house in deplorable conditions, according to an incident report from the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Roaches and rodents were in every room, there was no food in the kitchen and other parts of the home were “filthy and in complete disarray,” according to the report.

The disabled child, who was in a stroller, had bug bites all over her legs and arms, the report states.

The state Department of Social Services already had an open case on Lawson, the report states.

Lawson’s five children were placed in emergency protective custody
