Upstate man charged with drag racing on Spartanburg street
A Lyman man has been charged with reckless driving after police said he was driving without headlights on South Pine Street in Spartanburg.
Jonathan Russell Phillips, 20, of 12 Lee St. in Lyman, was arrested and taken to the Spartanburg County jail Sunday night.
A police officer was driving on South Pine Street when he saw two vehicles racing each other without using headlights around 9:40 p.m. Sunday, according to an incident report from the Spartanburg Police Department.
The officer caught up to the vehicles and one driver pulled over into the median while Phillips kept driving, the report states. Phillips eventually stopped, got out of his vehicle and told the officer, “I am human,” according to the report. He was taken into custody and charged with reckless driving.
Police have received numerous complaints about drag racing in the South Pine-Forest Avenue area, according to the report.
The report does not say how fast the cars were going.
