Richland 2 school art on display at Columbia airport
Works of art by Richland 2 students are among the new visual exhibits on display at Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
The airport is partnering with the school district to showcase works by students in the Palmetto Center for the Arts at Richland Northeast High School.
The collection includes abstract, baroque, contemporary, ceramics and more.
“We are so happy to be the first school in the state to collaborate with the airport to highlight the tremendous creativity and skills that our students possess,” Richland Northeast art teacher Mary Catherine Newman said. “I understand about 1,500 people visit the airport daily and we couldn’t be more pleased knowing that each of them could potentially see our masterpieces.”
Airport spokeswoman Lynne Douglas said the timing was perfect to form the partnership. “Richland Northeast reached out to us at a time when we were considering ways to expand our art program to specifically include student art. We were amazed to see the level of creativity by students that was presented to us,” Douglas said.
The artwork can can be found on departures level of the terminal near the baggage claim escalators and includes the display case near the USO in the main lobby. It will remain on display through Labor Day.
Rotating arts program
The Richland 2 art joins another exhibit recently launched at Columbia Metropolitan airport as part of its rotating arts program.
The current exhibit showcases the four winners of the Columbia Museum of Art’s Contemporaries competition held earlier this year.
The featured artists include Anna Sims King, Rebecca Hinson, Katie Pfrommer and Rachel Parker.
