Nintendo Confirms Sequel to 'Nintendo Switch Sports' on Switch 2

Nintendo made several exciting announcements yesterday, June 9, during its Nintendo Direct panel. Alongside confirmations of a Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remaster and a brand new Kingdom Hearts sequel, Nintendo also confirmed a new installment in one of the company's most popular franchises.

Nintendo Switch SportsResort will be a direct sequel to 2022's Nintendo Switch Sports, which, in turn, followed on from the hugely popular Wii Sports franchise. These collections of athletic minigames have become a constant fixture of Nintendo's consoles, giving fans an incredibly simple way of competing with their friends.

The Wii Sports games have been widely praised for their low barrier to entry, easy-to-master controls, and varied gameplay mechanics that mean there's always something for everybody. Nintendo Switch Sports marked a disappointing low point for the franchise, with critics arguing that many of the games lacked originality and didn't feel as streamlined as the previous instalments.

Nintendo Switch Sports featured games such as football, soccer, and tennis, which many critics believed were too complicated and whose controls weren't as intuitive as those of other games. This is a key area that Nintendo will have to work on for Nintendo Switch Sports Resort.

If the franchise's history is anything to judge by, fans should already be getting excited for Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. The sequel looks to follow a similar formula to Wii Sports Resort, which was the direct sequel to Wii Sports. The upcoming game has even copied the same title structure, leading fans to believe it will offer a similar progression.

Wii Sports Resort introduced games such as power cruising, canoeing, and air sports, using the new resort locations to its advantage for more outdoor sports. This was one of the sequel's biggest strengths, so it's encouraging to see that Nintendo Switch Sports Resort has adopted many of the same games.

The trailer from Nintendo Direct revealed an exciting lineup of minigames, including archery, table tennis, skateboarding, and even thumb wrestling-in addition to franchise classics like bowling, tennis, and basketball.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is currently scheduled to release exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026.
