Which SC home cooks made Epicurious’ list of 100 greatest of all time?
Epicurious food magazine, a sister publication of Bon Appetit and Gourmet, compiled a list of the 100 greatest home cooks — not trained chefs — in America. According to the editors, “these 100 food-obsessed Americans didn’t just cook incredible dinners for themselves — they changed the way we cook ours.”
Representing South Carolina in the 100 Greatest Home Cooks of All Time are:
Nathalie Dupree: “No matter where in the country you lived, Dupree made it possible to throw a party as if you were hosting from one of the brightly colored and palatial houses on the Charleston riverfront.”
Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor: author of Vibration Cooking: Or, the Travel Notes of a Geechee Girl. This Lowcountry native is quoted as wanting folks to be “able to turn the daily ritual of cooking for your family into a beautiful everyday happening.”
Matt and Ted Lee (the Lee Brothers): Epicurious describes them as “thoughtful, modern advocates for Southern food in general; as lovers of Charleston cuisine in particular; and as a couple of skinny nerds who really know how to throw a garden party.”
Dori Sanders: from Filbert, near York, a fourth-generation peach farmer and author. Epicurous says “the joys of the ‘make-do’ cooking that (Sanders) grew up with only intensify whe you try them out in your kitchen, connecting you to the scarcity and abundance that drove the creation of many of the world’s most delicious recipes.”
