Five Points Chick-fil-A getting a 2nd drive-thru lane
If you’re tired of waiting in line for your nuggets, the latest move by the Chick-fil-A in Five Points could give you a more blessed day.
The Chick-fil-A at 901 Harden St. received approval Tuesday to add a second drive-thru lane the restaurant hopes will speed up the time it can take drivers to get their food at the often crowded fast-food spot.
Having a second drive-thru option at the location at the corner of College Street will alleviate “the existing safety and traffic issues due to the current volume,” according to the application submitted to Columbia’s Board of Zoning Appeals.
The site, which shares a Harden Street entrance and exit with the Food Lion shopping complex, can get busy during the lunch and dinnertime rush, with cars circling the building on its 35,000-square-foot parcel. A second drive-thru lane would alleviate the off-site impact of traffic at peak hours, the application says.
The request received approval from the zoning board Tuesday.
This is the latest attempt by the popular restaurant to expand its reach. In 2017, franchise owner James Bennett applied to sell the chain’s signature chicken sandwiches from a food cart on Columbia’s Main Street. That proposal was voted down by City Council after complaints from other downtown businesses, including other restaurants.
