A major mixed-use development in a busy Midlands city is set to get a new restaurant.

Konnichiwa, a Japanese chain that has restaurants across the region and a couple in the Midlands, is set to bring a new location to the Cardinal Crossing development along bustling Forest Drive in Forest Acres, according to a Tuesday release from commercial real estate firm Colliers South Carolina.

There are 16 Konnichiwa restaurants across South Carolina and North Carolina, the release noted. That includes two other locations in the Midlands, one at 5086-A Sunset Blvd. in Lexington and another at 7420 Broad River Road in Irmo. The new Konnichiwa at Forest Acres’ Cardinal Crossing will occupy a roughly 5,000-square-foot space.

The menu at Konnichiwa includes a roster of Japanese favorites including sushi, sashimi, bento boxes, hibachi rice bowls, miso soup, ramen noodle soup and much more. An opening date for the Cardinal Crossing location has not been announced.

Cardinal Crossing is a $60 million mixed-use development off Forest Drive that has more than 250 apartments and a host of businesses and retailers. Among the businesses in the complex are Handel’s ice cream, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Surcheros restaurant, Clean Juice, Lazy Daisy coffee shop, and Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, among a number of others.

The Forest Drive area of Forest Acres is a high-traffic thoroughfare lined with stores, restaurants and other businesses. About 30,000 cars per day travel down Forest Drive, according to SC Department of Transportation statistics.
