Columbia is one of three national markets — Salt Lake City, Utah, and Columbus, Ohio, are the others — chosen by Wendy’s to test the chain’s new vegetarian Black Bean Burger.

In addition to black beans, the patty is made with wild rice, farro, onions, brown rice, carrots, quinoa, corn, green bell peppers and red bell peppers. Sauce and seasonings include ingredients such as red wine vinegar, chili peppers, cumin, sea salt, oregano and cilantro. The patty is cooked in a separate oven so that it does not come in contact with the grill where burgers and chicken are prepared.

While the toasted multigrain bun and black bean patty will be considered vegan, the pepper jack cheese and parmesan ranch sauce served with the burger are not vegan. However, since Wendy’s makes their sandwiches to order, the cheese and ranch sauce can be omitted.

Check Columbia area Wendy’s for availability.
