Columbia workshops to help families affected by Alzheimer’s, dementia
A series of workshops for families affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia are scheduled nwo through the fall.
The Columbia Urban League is presenting its first round of “In Our Community… Dementia Speaks” in August. The programs, made possible by a $20,000 grant from the S.C. Lieutenant Governor’s Office on Aging, are free for caregivers, family members or anyone who would like to learn more about caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s and/or dementia.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. In addition, more than 15 million caregivers provide more than 18 billion hours of unpaid care.
Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate and will be considered a Dementia Care Partner. To be considered a Dementia Care Partner, participants must complete 4.5 hours over the course of three to four days. Continuing education hours may also be awarded.
The Alzheimer’s Association is providing free sitter services so that caregivers can attend the seminars.
To register, contact “In Our Community… Dementia Speaks” project director Macie Smith at info@dtconsultant.org or (803) 518-1280.
