Leatherback visits Tybee Island beach (+ video)

A 1,600-pound leatherback turtle crawled onto the beach on Tybee Island on Thursday, The Savannah Morning News reported.

The massive turtle was found making its way back to the water at dawn. It was unclear whether the turtle had laid eggs, the newspaper said.

Tybee's last known leatherback nest was found more than 10 years ago, in 2004, the newspaper said.

A leatherback nest was discovered on Hilton Head earlier this month.

Since the beginning of May, 13 turtle nests were found in Beaufort County, 12 of which were loggerhead turtle nests.

Leatherbacks are the largest turtles on earth and can grow to be 8 feet long and weigh more than 2,000 pounds.

The smaller loggerhead is much more common at about three feet and 250 pounds.
