Edward A. and Karin K. Reed of Columbia are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Liwanag LaShawn Reed, to Zachary NeSmith, son of Carol NeSmith of Eastover.

The bride-elect, a resident of Durham, North Carolina, is the granddaughter of Edward C. Reed and the late Madgelene L. Reed of Laurel Hill, Florida. She earned a bachelor’s degree in fitness and wellness and is employed as a preschool teacher.

The bridegroom-elect, also a resident of Durham, is the grandson of Bob Hetzel and Marilyn Glowacki of Fort Myers, Florida. The stay-at-home dad is also a part-time cook.

Q: How did you meet?

A: Through mutual friends in high school.

Q: When did you know your fiance was “the one”?

A: After Lashawn completed her tour of duty with the Peace Corps in Gambia, West Africa, they reconnected while she was visiting her parents in Columbia. After a brief courtship and the birth of their daughter, Magnolia, he knew she was the one.

Q: Tell us about the proposal.

A: While on vacation in Washington state, Zach proposed after a romantic bike ride and hike to the top of Port Crescent, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
