W. R. “Bud” and Kathryn Jones “Kitty” Batchelor of Chapin recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married Sept. 2, 1956, in Jacksonville, Georgia.

Their children are Becky and Marvin Carter of Chapin and Gail and Lee Capell of Prosperity. Their grandchildren are Matt and Emma Carter, Doug Carter, Will Capell and Kitt Capell, and their great-grandchildren are Braddock Carter and the late Noah Carter.

Daughter Gail Capell writes, “God’s hand in the lives of your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren is a testimony to your commitment to Christ. We honor you, we love you, and we thank God for the blessing you are. Congratulations on 60 years!”

In their own words

Q: How did you meet?

A: We grew up 5 miles apart and went to the same school, but with four years difference in age, we only knew of each other. Bud was home on leave from Parris Island, and his older brother’s girlfriend asked to set Bud up with Kitty for a double date. The “little girl” he remembered was now in high school. They enjoyed a drive-in movie that weekend, and the rest is history.

Q: What was your favorite part of your wedding day?

A:

Kitty: My uncle who sang at the wedding surprised us by bringing an organ to the small rural church for the ceremony.

Bud: When the ceremony was over and we were headed out for honeymoon

Q: What do you wish you’d known your first year of marriage?

A:

Kitty: That I knew how to make biscuits, that intimacy was NOT overrated, and that it would be the most carefree, stress-free year of our marriage. Most importantly, that our love for each other would grow deeper and stronger with each passing year.

Bud: It’s impossible to make kids eat what they don’t want to, and the husband is not No. 1 in the household when the children are young.

Q: Tell us about a favorite moment in your marriage.

A: One year when Kitty accompanied Bud on a business trip to Reno, they were mistakenly booked in the honeymoon suite – with a round, raised bed in the center of the room with red covers, mirrors on the ceiling, and a mirrored bathroom. She realized how sheltered her life had been growing up in rural South Georgia!

The birth of our two daughters was favorite moment for both of us.
