SC restaurateur’s private plane skids off track. Police put out video of aftermath

The owner of a popular set of South Carolina restaurants came away unharmed when a private plane ran off the end of the runway after landing.

One of the owners of plane is William Hall, a story by Daniel J. Gross and Haley Walters of the Greenville News said. Hall runs Halls Chophouse, the noted Greenville and Charleston steakhouses. A Halls Chophouse is set to open in Columbia.

On Friday morning his twin engine plane skidded beyond the end of the runway at the Greenville Downtown Airport, according to the Greenville Police Department.

Hall, an attorney and a pilot were on board when the Beechcraft Baron aircraft headed down a grassy embankment and crashed into a cluster of trees, WYFF reported. A witness told WYFF that the plane tried to land once but went back up and circled around before the final crash landing. They flew out of Charleston.

“Dad was on the plane with the pilot and bad weather came in a little high on the runway. They couldn’t get it to stop in time,” Tommy Hall, son of the elder Hall, told the Greenville News. “Everybody’s good, it was just a little scary for everybody.”

The cause of the crash isn’t clear but the Greenville Downtown airport director told the Greenville News that rains “probably had something to do with it.”

“He just said he couldn’t stop, but I’m not sure why,” Airport Director Joe Frasher said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, reports say.

In May, Halls Chophouse bought Oak Table, the restaurant that used to be at the corner of Main and Gervais streets at the bottom of what was known as the NBSC building. Halls Chophouse is set to open its Columbia location in the fall.
