Emergency baby delivery in Upstate after car wreck. Three others injured

On Friday morning, a 37-year-old woman was traveling on Highway 25 near Traveler’s Rest in Greenville County when she lost control of her vehicle and spun into the oncoming lanes, hitting another car. The woman was pregnant.

WSPA reported on the accident that led to an emergency operation to deliver the baby.

The crash occurred around 7:45 a.m. near SC Highway 11 blocking all lanes of traffic, WSPA said. It was raining heavily, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

Emergency crews had to extract the pregnant woman from the vehicle. She, her passenger and the driver of the other vehicle were all taken to an area hospital.

The woman underwent an emergency cesarean section, delivering a girl. The baby passed away around 9:30 a.m., the coroner said. The cause of death was birth asphyxia due to maternal and placental blunt force trauma from the crash, the coroner’s office said, according to WSPA.

The condition of those involved with the accident is unknown.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and coroner are investigating, WSPA reported.
