Flags across South Carolina are lowered for deputy who lost his life in car crash

Gov. Henry McMaster ordered flags to be lowered across the state in honor of a Charleston deputy who lost his life in a recent car crash.

Deputy Jeremy LaDue of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office was killed in a car crash Monday. The crash occurred around 1:40 a.m. on the Savannah Highway near West Ashley while LaDue was on patrol, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Another vehicle collided with LaDue’s police vehicle as he was patrolling the area, according to the office; the driver of that vehicle was also killed.

In his order McMaster called LaDue remarkably brave and noted that the deputy had “dedicated his life to protecting and serving the people of the State of South Carolina and the residents of Charleston County.”

LaDue had worked for the Sheriff’s Office since February 2019, according to the department.

In a statement the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said it mourned LaDue’s death and that his coworkers “admired his dependability and enthusiasm. Our condolences go out to his family members and friends.”

Serve & Connect, an organization that works to connect community and police agencies, is hosting an online fundraiser for LaDue’s family.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision that led to the two deaths.
