A Greenwood man is dead after an officer-involved shooting.

That man has been identified as Willie Lee Quarles Sr., 60, according to a release from the Greenwood County Coroner’s Office.

Greenwood Police Department responded to a domestic incident at 9:20 p.m. at a house on North Hospital Street. After police arrived, there was a struggle and Quarles shot a police officer. The officer returned fire, killing Quarles, Greenwood Police spokesman Jonathan Link said in an email.

“Our officer is going to be okay because his vest stopped the bullet that was fired at him,” Link said.

The coroner’s office pronounced Quarles dead at 9:25 p.m. When they arrived, the found Quarles had been shot in the upper torso area, according to the release.

Quarles died at the scene. The agency involved in the shooting was Greenwood Police Department, Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox said in a press release.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting, according to the release.
