Police chase shuts down parts of I-20, officer-involved shooting leaves 1 suspect injured

May 8-AIKEN - Portions of Interstate 20 were closed off in Aiken County in the early morning hours of May 8 because of an officer-involved shooting that occurred after a police chase.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m., the Aiken County Sheriff's Office received a request to assist the South Carolina Highway Patrol with a vehicle pursuit on I-20 according to a release from the sheriff's office.

The pursuit ended near mile marker 23, where the armed driver of a fleeing vehicle got out and ran toward the westbound lanes.

During this encounter, the driver and sole suspect pointed a firearm at deputies, resulting in him being shot.

Deputies rendered aid to the driver and he was transported to an area hospital by EMS.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol will be handling the criminal charges for this incident.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been called and will be handling the officer involved shooting, the release said.

No deputies were injured during the incident.
