The most expensive municipal project in Charleston’s 345-year history is set to open this fall.

The $142 million Gaillard Center performing arts center will be dedicated Oct. 9, local media outlets report.

The center had been scheduled to open last month, in time for the Spoleto Festival USA which gets underway next week. But the builders said there was not time to tune the performing space to allow an April opening.

The city is expected to announce in the next few days the first shows that will feature both local and national artists.
