A doughnut freebie: National Doughnut Day is Friday (+ poll)

For those whose mouths watered as Homer Simpson dreamily would remark, “Mmm, donuts,” Friday is your best day.

Columbia-area stores are participating in National Doughnut Day with offers of free, munchy treats. But it’s one per customer, please.

Do you have a favorite donut? Take our poll at the bottom of this story.

All three Krispy Kreme shops in Columbia and elsewhere, some Dunkin’ Donuts and participating Bi-Lo grocery stores are handing out doughnuts – to anyone willing to wait in line.

Krispy Kreme spokeswoman Lafeesa Watson said customers may select from any variety. Last year, the Winston-Salem-based company gave away 100,000, a company news release states. No purchases are required at Krispy Kreme.

At Dunkin’ Donuts, you’ll have to buy a drink to get the freebie. But all locations, including those at Hess gas stations, are participating, a company spokesman said.

With, Bi-Lo, you’d better call first to determine which are offering free, yummy treats.

National Doughnut Day was originally established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.

More than 10 billion doughnuts are made each year in the U.S. alone.
