A company that is building weapons for Israeli defense forces plans to bring 300 jobs to Charleston County in the third quarter of 2022.

Elbit Systems of America plans to open a 135,000-square-foot facility in North Charleston that will increase the company’s manufacturing capacity and support future growth for new products, according to a news release.

The company plans to assemble ground combat vehicles at the facility.

Elbit America did not disclose the size of its investment but estimated the project would have a $380 million economic impact in the area.

The project supports a contract Elbit America received from Israel to supply automatic self-propelled howitzer gun systems to the country’s defense forces. The company identified 280 suppliers in South Carolina that can provide materials and services in that effort.

Elbit America plans to use the facility, which will be at 9028 Palmetto Commerce Parkway in North Charleston, for future assembly and integration efforts for the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security.

“Establishing this facility is part of a strategy to increase Elbit System’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities in the U.S. and contribute to strengthening America’s defense industrial base,” said Elbit Systems of America President & CEO Raanan Horowitz.

The state’s Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved job development credits, essentially a tax break for meeting certain benchmarks, related to this project, the governor’s office said in a news release. Charleston County also received a $700,000 grant to assist with costs related to this project.
