Not one but two new businesses will open at the same Five Points location on Friday.

Kremo Ice Cream and Gong Cha, a franchise specializing in bubble tea, will open its (their?) doors at 701 Santee Ave. at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

The tea side of the operation will be the second Gong Cha location in South Carolina, after one in North Charleston. Gong Cha also has stores in Augusta and Charlotte.

Bubble, or boba, tea is an Asian-inspired, tea-based drink that has taken off in the United States since it was first sold in Taiwan in the 1980s. It’s recognized by its distinctive chewy tapioca balls floating in a variety of flavors. Gong Cha also offers coffee, tea and smoothies along with its boba offerings.

Operating under the same roof, Kremo offers gourmet ice cream rolls. Cream is poured and spread over a freezing pan, then as it freezes, gets chopped and rolled into thin tubes. Customers can then add the topping of their choice and enjoy along with a bubble tea.

The combined stores’ hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
