Of all the businesses to shut down when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, local fun-seekers would have been particularly distressed to see Lexington fun park SkateStation USA shut down permanently.

Now the rinks will reopen next week as new owners move into the skating space on Oak Drive, next to the Barnyard Flea Market off Augusta Road.

Now called Sports and Skate Station, the business will hold a grand re-opening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Jan. 13.

On top of the renovated and rehabbed skating rink, Sports and Skate will also feature batting cages, basketball and even an indoor golf driving range. The night of the grand opening through the weekend will feature special skating competitions and DJs, the company announced in a press release.

In honor of the former Skate Station’s 35 years as a local family attraction, anyone born in 1987 or earlier is eligible for a prize drawing.

Sports and Skate Station is the brainchild of new owner Steve Ware, a Columbia native who also runs the conference and camping center River’s Edge Retreat off Bush River Road, and the Game Changers at River’s Edge, a Christian-based non-profit summer education and sports program for children.

“We really saw Sports & Skate Station as an extension of our ministry with Game Changers and Rivers Edge Retreat,” Ware said in a statement. “Our goal is to provide not only a family centered fun environment for our customers, but to expand our work with children in the community and support our summer programs for them. We are excited!”

After the grand opening, Sports and Skate Station’s normal hours will be: open skate from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, then theme night from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.; family night 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday; 18-and-up adult/nostalgia night 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday; teen night 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday; and all-ages 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.
