The Capital City area is about to get its second, scaled-back neighborhood Walmart.

It is the second example in recent months of the retail giant moving away from superstores in the Columbia market after the announcement in May of a neighborhood store in Cayce.

Cypress Acquisitions has bought almost 12 acres at 3533 Broad River Road to build a “Neighborhood Market,” which is typically about one-fourth the size of a supercenter, commercial real estate brokers NAI Avant said Wednesday.

The location is north of Widewater shopping center and near the intersection with Beatty Road.

Walmart’s neighborhood market, which is typically about a quarter of the size of a supercenter. They sell traditional convenience store goods with an expanded selection of grocery items and prepared foods.

The Cayce store is being constructed on an 8.3-acre site on Knox Abbott Drive next to Love Chevrolet to house a 40,000-square-foot store flanked by a service station and 6,300-square-foot annex that could support up to four stores.
