UPS to close Columbia, SC area hub amid job cuts. Here’s what we know
The United Parcel Service is closing its Midlands hub in West Columbia.
The closure on Old Dunbar Road is one of nearly two dozen locations slated to be shuttered in more than 18 states, including facilities in Georgia, Florida and Texas, according to reporting by the publication FreightWaves. Those plans were revealed in a court filing earlier this week.
UPS announced in January that it would cut some 30,000 jobs in the coming year, as its partnership with Amazon winds down. According to Fast Company, UPS had already rid itself of 48,000 jobs last year.
“We’re well into the largest U.S. network reconfiguration in UPS history, creating a nimbler, more efficient operation by modernizing our facilities and matching our size and resources to support growth initiatives,” a UPS spokesperson told trade magazine Fast Company. “Some positions will be affected, though most changes are expected to occur through attrition. We’re committed to supporting our people throughout this process.”
The closures will affect union employees. Midlands UPS employees are represented by the Local 509 chapter of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, though it is unclear how many employees will lose jobs locally. The State has reached out to the union.
The national Teamsters organization filed a federal lawsuit in a Massachusetts district court over a planned voluntary buyout program for union drivers, claiming it violated the union’s contract.
